Hola, mis amigos! Hope all is well.

I know that time is such a precious and valuable commodity for all of us, so we have to be deliberate in choosing where we invest our time.

Please read carefully the letter from Ned Sledge, Chair of the Logistics Committee for the Statewide Hispanic Youth Symposium, and consider volunteering a few hours of your time. Setting up the place and registering the students and volunteers may not be the glamorous assignment, but as a member of the logistic team, you play a critical role in the overall success of the symposium.

Marcel Chavan-Matviuk is the Hispanic Heroes Chair and is also seeking volunteers who are willing to share their experience as a professional, the skills and education needed for the profession, challenges faced reaching their career goals and how they overcame those challenges, and their best advice.

I have participated in the Hispanic Youth Symposium since its inception and it is one of my most rewarding experiences. I can't think of a better investment of time!

I hope you will join me to make this year's symposium a rewarding experience for our youth.

Hasta luego.

Dear Friend:

The Hispanic Youth Institute, a program of the Hispanic College Fund, kicks off each year with a Hispanic Youth Symposium (HYS) on college campuses across the nation. Launched in 2004, this four-day, three-night college empowerment program will brings 250 underserved Hispanic high school students together, with the purpose of changing their college-going and career trajectories.

The Symposium allows high school students to:

1. Experience college firsthand

2. Meet role models and mentors

3. Develop strategies to overcome obstacles to success

4. Learn about resources and tools to get acceptedto and pay for college

5. Obtain a  long-term vision of career possibilities

6. Learn about the importance of giving back to the community

The Virginia Hispanic Youth Symposium will take place July 14-17, 2010, on the campus of Virginia State University in Petersburg, VA. We're looking for Logistics volunteers to help man the tables for registering students (and to register other volunteers), assist with facilities setup, manage the Hospitality Room - in other words, all the practical roles that are so crucial to ensuring a successful and smooth-running symposium.ĦĦ
